Research summary
Over 50% of people diagnosed with cancer will need radiotherapy, with breast cancer being one of the most common types requiring treatment. Radiotherapy can cause skin changes but historically this has often been assessed using tools that rely on 'redness' as a key indicator. This approach is problematic for people of colour, where redness may not be visible, leading to under-recognition and inadequate care. Existing assessment tools lack validation across diverse skin tones, and medical education often fails to represent people of colour accurately. The Inclusive Skin Reaction Assessment for People of Colour Undergoing Radiotherapy: Empowering Evaluation (INSPIRE) project aims to address these gaps by developing inclusive, patient-centred assessment tools that better capture skin changes in all skin types, ensuring more equitable care in breast cancer radiotherapy
