Research summary
QUALITATIVE INSIGHTS INTO USER EXPERIENCES OF TIER 2 AND TIER 3 WEIGHT MANAGEMENT SERVICES
Between 1993 and 2013, the proportion of adults that were considered obese in England (as defined by the World Health Organisation as a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30kg/m2) increased from 13.2% to 26% amongst men and from 16% to 24% amongst women . Tackling obesity has become one of Public Health England’s strategic priorities for 2015-2016.
This study has been commissioned by Public Health England (PHE) with the aim of determining “what works” in weight management services. The study will focus particularly on understanding the experiences and views of adult and child users of tier 2 and tier 3 weight management services. Our findings will build upon a series of evidence reviews, commissioned by PHE, and will inform PHE's development of blueprints for commissioners and providers of obesity services.
Our research activities will engage service users through co-design workshops and ethnographic interviews that will aim to understand their views on:
● what features of a weight management service make it effective?
● how can weight management services be improved?
● what wider factors within service users’ lives impact on whether a service is effective or not, and what can service providers do about it?In addition, we will ask a range of stakeholders, including commissioners and providers of tier 2 and tier 3 weight management services, to share their own insights through a service evaluation workshop and research interviews, and to contribute to the analysis of our findings.
The research with service users will take place in the London Borough of Newham, Greater Manchester and Suffolk, between March and June, and will involve in the region of 40 service users and 20 stakeholders.
