Research summary
Young people living with chronic illnesses face challenges in their psychological, physical and social health. School is an important environment for young people and one where these challenges can be amplified. Most research focusses on qualifications and attendance, but it is important to look at a fuller picture of what young people experience in their school lives. The current ethics application is for a work stream which forms part of a larger programme of research aiming to improve the way young people with chronic illnesses experience their school lives and how this is supported, assessed and recorded by the professionals around them. This qualitative work stream will involve interviews and focus groups with over 100 young people from across 10 different areas of paediatric chronic ill-health. The aim is to understand, from the perspective of young people, the ways in which their health impacts their school lives. This will be supported by a survey of relevant clinical staff members, to ask their perspective on their patients' school lives and how they are currently supported. The results of this work stream will be used as the basis for developing a new assessment in the remainder of the research programme.
