Research summary
Assistive technology for cognition can be used in neuropsychological rehabilitation after acquired brain injury (ABI) to compensate for cognitive difficulties. For example technology can guide people through the stages of multi-step tasks or by give people timely reminders about memory tasks. People with ABI often experience low motivation and can find it difficult to initiate meaningful social and leisure activities. There is potential for using technology to help with this by using sensing technology to decide when and how to deliver prompts to target inactivity and a lack of initiation. Such prompts could aid memory and could help to reduce the barriers to everyday activities. This research project aims to understand the barriers which prevent the performance of everyday activities which give meaning and establish how technology should be designed to help reduce these barriers. Focus groups with people with ABI and clinicians and one-to one interviews with people with ABI will be conducted in order to inform the design of technologies which can be useful as neuropsychological rehabilitation tools.
