Research summary
Information and support for cancer patients with brain tumours is well established with the aid of various cancer-specific charities including Cancer Focus, Macmillan Cancer Care and The Brain Tumour Charity all providing both information leaflets and on-line support. Although these charities welcome patients with non-malignant conditions, patients with these conditions may not feel that these charities really fit with their experience especially as they mainly have ‘Cancer’ in their titles. Additionally, radiotherapy is usually delivered in specialist cancer centres, making no differentiation between malignant and non-malignant patients and the treatment pathways of both conditions from diagnosis to treatment follow similar paths, including the information delivered and provided to the patient. It is, therefore, necessary to explore whether the support and information needs of non-malignant brain tumour patients, are currently being met by healthcare professionals and the healthcare environment or whether unique information specific to non-malignant conditions would be more beneficial to this group of patients.
