Research summary
How well do flu vaccines work?
Influenza ("flu") is a respiratory virus that makes millions of children ill each year. This study will help doctors better understand how flu affects children and how well available vaccines work to prevent flu. Study results could help improve the prevention or treatment of different strains of the flu virus.
Children aged two to seven years presenting to hospital Emergency departments or other ambulatory settings (e.g. outpatients department, observations unit etc.) with symptoms of influenza-like illness will be able to take part (with parental consent). The study will normally be completed in one visit. It involves a brief eligibility check and some questions relating to the child's health. Details of any recent flu vaccinations will also be recorded, and a nasal swab obtained in order to determine whether flu and/or other respiratory viruses are present in the child's nose.REC name
