Research summary
The project will centre on an intercalating medical student who will be investigating the prevalence of influenza C in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and a GP surgery in Lancaster. Influenza C is neglected virus that is related to influenza A (the cause of pandemic flu). It has been associated with cases of pneumonia in children. Much of its basic clinical biology remains unknown, and only two new strains have been completely characterised since 2000. This is a pilot study for what we hope will become a larger investigation of not only influenza C, but also other viruses in a range of respiratory conditions, including asthma. We seek to optimise sample collection and processing methods, DNA sequencing techniques and computer analysis.
