Research summary
Exploring the influences on a parent's decision of where their baby sleeps at night.
The role of the Health Visitor is to follow the Healthy Child Programme (Department of Health, 2009). Part of this plan is to ensure that children are kept healthy and safe. During universal contacts Health Visitors give advice to parents to be and also new parents around safe sleeping guidance.
During a contact with a family the Health Visitor will discuss all aspects of sudden infant death prevention including risks of smoking around the baby etc. and for safe sleeping. The current guideline is to state that the safest place for the baby to sleep is in their cot in their parents room for the first six months of their life (Lullaby Trust, 2014). Safety guidance is also given incase parents chose not to follow this advice however, the researcher would like to investigate what it is that influences the parents decision on where they place their baby to sleep following the guidance given by health professionals. The decision of where the baby sleeps at night is ultimately the parents choice however, it is also the responsibility of the nurse practitioner to ensure that the parents choice is informed (Sobralske & Gruber, 2009). It is of interest to the researcher if the guidance given by Health care professionals does actually influence the parents decision or if they make their decisions based on family discussion or have a preconception from the antenatal period.REC name
