Research summary
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and is associated with iron deficiency anaemia and secondary thrombocytosis (raised platelet counts) the cause of which is unclear. Patients with IBD routinely have iron infusions for iron deficiency anaemia and this has recently been shown to reduce platelet counts however the mechanisms behind this is unidentified. This study attempts to investigate the effects of iron infusion on platelet function in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
