Research summary
There has been a rapid increase in the number of oral and injectable medicines available to treat inflammatory skin diseases which are driven by the immune system, including psoriasis, atopic eczema (AE) and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). It is becoming more clear that not all patients respond well to these treatments, and some patients develop side effects. In a significant proportion of patients, switching or combining treatments is often necessary to achieve a good outcome. This can be very challenging and time-consuming for both patient and clinician. It is important to understand why these differences occur, and develop personalised treatment plans to improve the treatment journey, reduce burden of disease and improve cost-effectiveness. Therefore, efforts to optimise selecting the right drug first time for each patient are critical.
This study will provide an in-depth investigation of the mechanisms of disease and response to oral or injectable therapies in patients with inflammatory skin disease. By combining health information and analyses from skin swabs, blood tests and skin biopsies, we aim to identify differences between patients with the same disease that could explain or predict differences in response to treatment. This work may help personalise therapy selection for patients.
