  • Data collection arrangements

This research database aims to facilitate the study the relationship between clinical, histological and endoscopic features and development of colorectal cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The database will include all patients who are/were under endoscopic surveillance for colorectal cancer from 1971 to present at both the London North West Healthcare NHS Trust and the Barts Health NHS Trust. The data fields collected in this study include patient demographics, past medical and surgical history, drug history, operative data, postoperative data, pathology, endoscopy and follow up data. The database will be stored on password-locked NHS computers and no patient identifiable data will be included in the research database. Only members of the research team will have access to these stored data.

  • Research programme

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have an increased risk of developing bowel cancer. For this reason, they are enrolled nationally into surveillance programmes that aim to detect pre-cancerous changes. The current surveillance program faces numerous challenges including missed cancer, high costs and over-diagnosis of pre-cancerous changes, many of which will not actually progress to cancer. St. Mark’s Hospital conducts the United Kingdom’s oldest and the largest IBD surveillance programme, and Barts Health NHS Trust is the largest NHS Trust in the country. We will establish a research database comprising of all IBD surveillance endoscopies performed at both NHS organisations. The database will be used to perform series of observational studies, aiming to study the relationship between clinical, endoscopic and histological parameters and colorectal cancer. We will examine whether there are any clinical parameters that can accurately predict future development of colorectal cancer. The outcomes of database analysis will be published in peer-reviewed journals and can influence future national gastroenterology guidelines on IBD surveillance. This in turn may confer benefits to patient with IBD enrolled into surveillance programmes across the country, as well as improved cost-efficiency of the National Health Service surveillance programme through reduced screening of low risk patients.
