  • Research summary

The chief aim of this study is to investigate the use of individualised music in dementia care and treatment; specifically for people with moderate to severe dementia currently being treated and cared for in a specialist mental health hospital. The study hypothesis is that individuals will display less agitation in periods during which individualised music intervention is being used compared with periods where it is not being implemented. Secondary aims are to examine the feasibility and practicability of the intervention in this setting.
The study will take place over 4 weeks: 7 days of baseline data collection, 7 days of daily indivdualised music for 30 minutes, 7 days with no music, and a further 7 days with individualised music again. Agitation levels will be measured throughout. Focus groups and interviews will be held with healthcare professionals and carers respectively to explore experiences and opinions on the use of individualised music in the care of people with mdoerate to severe dementia displaying agitaiton.
