  • Research summary

Background: Relapse can be very distressing and disabling for people with psychosis. Having a fear of relapse/recurrence (FoR) is more likely to relapse. Despite this, there are not many treatment options targeting FoR in psychosis However, there is opportunity to learn from cancer services that provide treatment for FoR including talking therapies.

Aims: To conduct one study across three work packages to 1) understand FoR from the perspectives of oncology and psychosis patients and staff - and for patients with experience of psychosis specifically - to understand the impact of their social networks on FoR discussion, 2) and then share this information with patients and staff and work together to co-design an intervention using participatory design methodologies, and 3) then refine the intervention further by showing patients a prototype and asking for feedback.

Participants: Participants must be over 16. For the mental health studies, patients must be diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum condition and be able to give informed consent. Staff must work in local mental health services. For the oncology study, service users must be over 16 and have accessed the FoR service procided by a local third sector organisation, Staff must work in local oncology services in both the NHS or third sector.

Recruitment: Around twenty-five patients and 20 mental health staff will be recruited from NHS GG&C and local third-sector organisations. Around ten people will be recruited from a third sector cancer support org, and ten oncology staff will be recruited from NHS oncology services.

Design: The three studies will use mixed methods, a mixture of open-ended interviews and responses to closed questions that use numbers, such as asking people to rate comfort discussing FoR between 1-10. All data will be analysed according to a pre-existing framework to help guide the development of a new intervention.
