Research summary
The main aim of this study is to identify what proportion of patients that visit high street dental practices have either high risk of diabetes, a condition known as non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (NDH) or have type 2 diabetes which has not yet been diagnosed. This will be done by asking a known network of high street dental practices to recruit up to 10,000 patients over the course of the study period. Each of these patients will be asked to complete a risk questionnaire and will have a finger-prick blood sample collected. Patients will also be asked whether they are willing to provide a saliva sample.
This programme of work will determine:
• The validity of the DDS and Leicester Risk Assessment score (LRA) tools in a diverse adult dental population across the UK.
• The prevalence of undiagnosed Non-Diabetic Hyperglycaemia/Type 2 Diabetes in a multi-ethnic, pan-socioeconomic adult population attending high-street dental practices.
• The onward medical management of patients once they are identified as high-risk of diabetes in the dental setting. An additional element of the study will involve requesting a voluntary saliva sample to allow potential linkage of saliva diagnostics to diabetes / periodontal status.
This will be pivotal to help establish and implement new national care-pathways for the holistic management of patients with both diabetes and periodontitis.
