  • Research summary

The study will use a qualitative study design using semi-structured interviews to explore the views of older transgender, non-binary and gender diverse (TNB) people about how comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) might be best structured to meet their health and social care needs should they become frail. CGA is the gold standard method of assessment and treatment of frail older people. The optimal structure of CGA is an on-going area of research and has never been evaluated in TNB older people.

10-12 participants who identify as TNB and are aged over 50 will be invited to participate in interviews regarding their views on:
    1) Clinician competency around issues related to TNB individuals
    2) How health and social care staff can best respect the dignity of TNB individuals
    3) Thoughts and feelings around health and dependency and navigating access to formal and informal care.

A thematic analysis will be conducted using interview transcripts followed by systematic coding by the PI and a research assistant.

Results will be used to develop suggested models of CGA for TNB people with a view to developing such models through future research. Findings will be disseminated through reputable medical journals and medical conferences.
