Research summary
Background: Individuals with schizophrenia experience high rates of obesity and related diseases and, as such, may have shorter lives. Physical activity (PA) can help individuals with schizophrenia reduce their weight, yet this population is often inactive because of low confidence and knowledge of PA. Providing relevant information with appropriate support has been recommended to help this population become and stay active. No research has examined how information and support services can be improved for this population in the UK.
Objectives: This project will identify the best individuals to provide PA information and support services to those with schizophrenia and their families, how and when this information and these services should be delivered, and how clinicians can meet service users’ needs.
Project: Sets of focus groups will be conducted with individuals with schizophrenia receiving care at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, family caregivers of those with schizophrenia, and clinicians, respectively. Focus groups will identify best practices for communicating PA information and service provisions.
Outcomes: Workshops will be held to present findings, promote new research collaborations, set PA information and service guidelines, and establish intervention priorities.REC name
