Research summary
Around 1 in 5 people who die by suicide have visited hospital in the year before their death because of self-harm. This indicates the hospital visit did not help to relieve their distress. Research is needed to increase support for people who self-harm, to improve their mental health and reduce distress. However not many people who have been to the Emergency Department for self-harm agree to take part in research. This may be because they are distressed, or because they do not see research as being relevant or useful. Researchers need to improve the way that they approach people to take part in studies. They also need to make sure that research focuses on things that are important and relevant to people who self-harm. We have planned a research study to address these issues. We intend to conduct interviews with 20 people who have self-harmed, to learn about barriers to taking part in research and which outcomes are most important to them. Service users have been actively involved in developing our plans for this research.
