Research summary
This study will be a survey of dysthyroid optic neuropathy using prospective case ascertainment through the British Ophthalmological Surveillance Unit (BOSU) monthly reporting card scheme. This is an active surveillance system involving all UK consultant ophthalmologists. Ophthalmologists will indicate that they have seen a new case through the BOSU. The BOSU collects no patient identifying information but will notify the study investigator (Dr Wong) of all new cases who will contact the reporting ophthalmologist directly. This is an epidemiological study using only information available from the patient case notes. The reporting Ophthalmologists will provide information confirming the diagnosis and other clinical features using a data collection proforma. No one outside the patients care team will access the hospital notes.
