  • Research summary

The purpose of this project is to conduct a feasibility study to set up and enable residents living in a care home to access the materials on the Derry Reminiscence Website (DRW) and to evaluate the effect that it has on their behaviour and mood.

    Objectives:
With regards to the DRW and a sample of 6 older adults with physical and mental health difficulties to:

1.Document the processes required to enable the website to be available and accessed within the care home environment
2.Enable residents to see and listen to the materials in the DRW
3.Explore the impact, if any, of the DRW on residents’ anxiety/agitation, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia and depression.
4.Explore the impact of the DRW on psychological and social needs of older people and their carers by providing social stimulation, a sense of inclusion, a sense of well-being and a sense of accomplishment
5.Estimate the cost of providing DRW materials
    6. Ask staff whether they believe the DRW helps them to ‘connect’ and communicate with the residents.
7.Document whether the DRW aids the reduction of day centre / ward incidents.

Methods used will be to gather baseline data for the 6 participants then use the DRW for 8 weeks. Further data will be gathered at weeks 4 and 10. Focus group interviews will be held at similar time points with family members, staff and those with dementia to seek their views on this resource.
