Research summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the rapid introduction of remote consultations in primary care. While a lot of consultation in primary are nowadays delivered in-person again, remote consultation services (especially services delivered over the phone) are here to stay. Yet, we know little about how these consultations actually work, which communicative problems recur in these consultations, how these problems could be resolved and whether these problems recur at specific moments during these remote consultations. The present study will therefore audio-record remote GP-patient interactions in order to study the communication that takes place between GPs and patients during remote consultations. We will record up to 50 consultations involving up to 8 GPs and 50 patients. We will use conversation analysis to describe their communication patterns, by focusing on verbal and non-verbal conduct and their social consequences, thereby moving the analysis beyond individual psychological dispositions. In addition, field notes will also be collected, involving the GPs non-verbal behaviour during the consultation, information regarding the purpose of the consultation and anything else which may impact on the consultation. Our findings will be used as the basis for written reports, training resources and will be disseminated to clinicians.
