Research summary
People with vasculitis now have excellent long-term survival thanks to drugs used to manage the disease. However the quality of life experienced by these patients is an important consideration in the care of these patients. Studies show that certain characteristics that are psychological in origin can affect quality of life; for example, skills for coping with daily life while living with the symptoms of the disease like tiredness and pain. Researchers have concluded that psychological treatments may help to improve the quality of life for patients. So that the treatment can be delivered as part of health care it is cheaper and easier to have it given by a health care professional other than a doctor or nurse, and to many patients at one time. This study then will develop and test a treatment for patients in groups of about 10 over a course of 8 two-hour long weekly sessions. Vasculitis patients will be surveyed to find those who are already reporting lower quality of life. They will be invited to join the study. After collecting baseline information, patients will be randomly chosen to receive the intervention, or to join a group who will receive the intervention after a delay. After the first group have finished the treatment they will again have their quality of life measured, and compared with the group who were on the waiting list. After these measures have been taken and compared the second group will also take part in the treatment.
