Research summary
This study aims to improve how we care for patients who suffer a medical condition where the heart stops in the community called “cardiac arrest” (Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest - OOHCA). A quarter of a million patients experience OOHCA across the world per year but unfortunately, even with current best care, only a third of patients can be expected to survive and leave hospital.
Our study has two principal aims. The first is to identify cardiac arrest patients who are most likely to recover from the condition and benefit from advanced and intensive treatments by developing a new risk score. The second is to improve our understanding of how patients with cardiac arrest recover in the longer term after being discharged from hospital.
We will collect variables from medical records in patients admitted with cardiac arrest before, during and after admission that will be incorporated into a risk score that will support clinical decision making. We will also conduct a follow-up telephone interview to characterise long term recovery.
