Research summary
Many patients experience pain in hospital. Pain is often poorly managed and a number of patients are dissatisfied with pain management. This study will explore the possibility of two different ways to improve health care professionals’ management of patients’ pain which may lead to improved patient satisfaction. The findings of this study will hopefully show how suitable these ways of improving pain management and data collection methods are to lead to the development of a larger study. Patients (n=80, 20 from each ward) will be asked to take part in a telephone interview looking at their experience of how their pain was handled during their time on the ward. Health care professionals employed on these wards will complete a questionnaire looking at current pain management practices and their working environment. Four wards from one hospital will be used in this study. On 2 of the wards the health care professionals who delivered patient care to the study participants will receive feedback from patients about their experience of pain management. On another 2 of the 4 wards there will be discussion with healthcare professionals about the current process of managing patients’ pain on the ward and how they think this could be improved. The final two wards will receive no management methods (control group). Health care professionals employed on studied wards will be invited to complete a questionnaire to evaluated the usefulness of the two different ways, which will help us plan and use these management processes in the future
