  • Research summary

Cancer is the leading cause of death in England. Diagnosing cancer at an earlier stage of the disease can improve cancer outcomes; the NHS long term health plan published in January 2019 has set a goal of diagnosing 75% of cancers at stage 1 and 2 by 2028. One approach to reducing deaths from cancer is to diagnose cancer at an earlier stage of the disease. Optimally using investigations in primary care could contribute to this aim, but evidence about the use of such tests in patients subsequently diagnosed with cancer is scarce. This project aims to address these knowledge gaps using anonymous data from the National Cancer Diagnosis Audit, which collected information on the diagnostic pathway of cancer patients from GPs and other healthcare professionals in primary care.
