  • Research summary

Background: Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Each month 495 people in Northern Ireland have a heart attack. Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is offered to all heart attack patients; it is an effective education and exercise programme which helps prevent further heart attacks and improves long-term health. Even though CR is effective more than half of eligible patients choose not to attend.
Aim: To explore why patients choose not to attend or complete CR and to develop new ways of providing the service which will be more appealing to patients
Methods: The study uses a method where patients, staff and researchers collaborate to find a solution to the problem. The total number of participants will be split between each of the 5 health Trusts.
Focus groups and interviews. There are 4 main groups of participants; each will discuss their experiences of the current provision of CR and include ideas for change.
    Group A – Staff.
Group B – Patients who have attended most or all CR classes.
Group C – Patients who dropped out of CR.
Group D – Patients who did not attend any CR classes.

Co-Design Workshop – A session with participants from Groups A-D, patient representatives, experts in heart medicine, staff who run CR programmes, Heart Charities and University supervisors who will use the information from the focus groups and interviews to develop new methods of delivering CR.
Outcome: New methods of providing CR will be co-designed by staff, patients and the public.
