Research summary
This project will work in partnership with Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust’s Veterans Mental Health Service. It is argued that there is an increasing demand for Veterans Mental Health Services, especially those that address alcohol problems. However, the experiences of the Veterans’ Mental Health Services are that this is a very unique group who are difficult to engage and rapidly disengage from treatment soon after periods of crisis. This project will use semi-structured interviews in order to understand why veterans are reluctant to access help for alcohol problems. Applied social science methodology will be used to analyse data with the aim of suggesting strategies that will reduce barriers and encourage veterans with difficulties to engage with alcohol services.
