  • Research summary

A number of GP practices across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have come together to form One Care Consortium. The Consortium was successful in bidding for funds from the government to help improve local services and access to GP practices. One Care is working with GP practices across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to trial innovative ways of working to help relieve some of the frustrations patients are currently experiencing accessing primary care.

One of the innovations that OneCare is piloting is eConsult, a suite of online patient services developed to give patients access to advice and care via their own GP practice website and allowing patients to consult their GP from home. The impact of eConsult will be assessed by NIHR CLAHRC West who will observe how eConsult is working for practice staff, interview members of staff in a number of practices and analyse data collected by practices.

The overarching aim of the study will be to evaluate the impact, effectiveness and costs of implementing eConsult across participating general practices in the One Care Consortium. The study will examine the types of practices which have implemented eConsult, the types of patients using it and the potential impact on both practice and patient. The research will be mixed methods involving a qualitative, quantitative and economic evaluation.
