  • Research summary

    Community pharmacy plays a substantial role in the delivery of both COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. Pharmacies also offer a range of additional healthcare services, such as smoking cessation, blood pressure checks and blood glucose measurements. Improving the uptake of these healthcare services by integrating them with vaccine delivery could help many patients identify health risks earlier, that otherwise might have gone unnoticed through conventional routine care.

    In response to the potential opportunities of this kind of integrated service, the Priory Community Pharmacy offers a range of cardiovascular health checks that can be done during their vaccination service. Supporting resources, such as Make Every Contact Count (MECC), proactively encourage people to take advantage of the integrated service that is tailored towards their needs. All services included as part of the integrated services are free for the patient. Data from the health check is shared with selected GP practices in the Dudley area.

    As part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), Aston University and the Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA) has developed the Research and Evaluation of improving Access to Cardiovascular disease and Healthy Lifestyle checks (Priory REACH) programme. The overall aim of this project is to evaluate the impact of this integrated service provided by the Priory pharmacy, through two key objectives:

    i) Assess the acceptability and feasibility of the service to staff and patients;
    ii) Evaluate staff and patient views on the resources used to support the implementation of the integrated service.
