Research summary
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a well-established technique for imaging disease within the body. We have been performing MRI at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals since 1986 as a clinical service. However, it is recognised that MRI is an evolving imaging technique. With ongoing developments in MRI technology, new and more advanced ways of acquiring, processing and using MR images are introduced regularly in order to improve image quality and patient care.
In order to evaluate this systematically, we wish to ask patients for permission for up to 20 minutes maximum of additional scanning time on the MRI scanner when they come for a clinically indicated MRI in order to assess modifications to existing MRI sequences or use of new developed MRI sequences. Secondly, we are asking for permission to access their clinical health data (medical records) after the scan to assess if these changes we make to MRI accurately reflects their disease (diagnosis) and if it is making an impact on their care (management) and outcome.
