Research summary
This is a prospective controlled study looking at the metabolic/proteomic constituents of the vitreous humour of patients with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) versus those without. The participant group will be all consecutive patients with primary (de novo) and secondary (consequent to previous surgery) PVR retinal detachment, who consent to participate in the study. The control group will be patients from the same clinical pool who are undergoing vitrectomy surgery for floaters, macular hole or epiretinal membrane.
The research questions will address:
1. Whether the proposed analytical techniques can detect potential biochemical markers of PVR
2. Can potential screening and therapeutic molecular targets for novel therapies against PVR formation be identified? We also seek to demonstrate the feasibility of a larger study, support any such study with preliminary results, facilitating the acquisition of further funding and to guide the direction of the future long-term project.
