Research summary
What are the aims of the study?
This study aims to improve our understanding about the physical health needs of older people who are under mental health services. Secondly, we will develop recommendations for physical health care services for older people who are under mental health services.
Background
Almost all older people with mental ill-health have at least one physical health condition, resulting in longer patient stays in hospital, and worse outcomes. Access to physical health care for older people with mental health problems is patchy, and services have focussed on improving physical health in younger people, or in medical, rather than mental health services. However, older people under mental health services face different challenges, for example they experience a greater number of medical problems, and side effects from medications. Therefore, services need to be designed specifically for older people with combined mental and physical health needs. We will address this problem by undertaking interviews with current patients under mental health services, their carers, mental health practitioners, social workers, and hospital managers/commissioners to understand their views on the physical health needs of older patients under mental health services. Finally, we will use this information to undertake a meeting with participants from the interview study to develop recommendations for a service providing physical health care to older people who are under mental health services.
Benefits to patients
This study will improve our understanding of the current physical health needs of older people under mental health services. Currently, few services provide good quality physical health care to older people under mental health services and this study will help address this inequality.REC name
