  • Research summary

The Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) model is an evidence-based approach to providing treatment for those who experience a first episode of psychosis. An EIP service targets the first 3 years or ‘critical period’ of first episode of psychosis where research has shown that early and intensive treatment can reduce the chance of further episodes of psychosis and improves longer term outcomes (Birchwood, 2014).

This project will explore the implementation of the Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) model in a rural Scottish health board by utilising a mixed methods approach. An implementation research design will use both interviews and service evaluation data to explore the factors that are barriers and facilitators to implementing an EIP service in this rural setting. Qualitive data will be collected in the form of interviews with individuals who have engaged with EIP services in NHS Dumfries and Galloway (D&G) as a service user, or family members/care giver of service user, or as an NHS staff member. A grounded theory approach will explore how service users and staff experience and make sense of EIP in a rural setting, considering both the acceptability of the service and the fidelity to the EIP model. The qualitative findings will form the basis for the research while quantitative service evaluation data will provide additional information and characterise the service in its local context. The research project will provide data, from a range of sources, on delivering EIP in a rural area and help to identify the unique barriers and facilitators presented by a rural area. The collaborative nature of the findings will help to inform best practice for the delivery of EIP in a rural setting.
