Research summary
We are exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to support doctors and nurses with writing clinical notes after patient consultations. This project focuses on a tool known as an AI scribe — a system that listens to conversations between patients and healthcare staff and helps generate summaries of the discussion for entering into medical records.
The project will take place at the Royal London Hospital Urgent Treatment Centre. A service staffed by GPs and nurses who see patients with primary care problems from a broad and diverse community in East London. Our aim is to understand how this technology might be introduced in a way that is safe, fair, and acceptable to both patients and clinicians.
In Phase 1, we will interview patients and clinicians to hear their views on AI scribes — what they understand about them, any worries, or expectations they have, and what kind of information they would need to feel comfortable with its use. These interviews will help us design clear educational materials for both patients and clinicians. At the end of the interview we will invite participants to join a co-design user group. Participants will individually be sent further educational material to provide feedback on via email, they will be asked to provide feedback no more than 3 times. At this stage we seek ethical approval for Phase 1 of the study (conduction of interviews and feedback via email). The knowledge and material created in phase 1 will feed into phase 2 and 3 of the study where we will implement and evaluate AI scribes.
