  • Research summary

The way dentists look after decay in children’s baby teeth has changed considerably in recent years. Therefore a project (FiCTION) is looking at the best way of treating this decay.

Conducting this study (IMPACT) within primary dental care(dental practices) alongside the FiCTION trial will help to address some of the knowledge gaps evident with regard to whether conducting research in primary dental care affects a parents anxiety or attitude over time. To help improve patient-dentist relationships and provide more patient-centered and effective treatment dentists need to understand if/how parents are affected when participating in research.

The main aim of this project is:
•To investigate if participating in a randomised controlled trial impacts on a parent’s dental anxiety, oral health-related quality of life (satisfaction) and attitude to their dental care and that of their children

IMPACT will involve four groups of participants who agree to take part:
•Parents of children participating in the FiCTION trial within Scotland and north-east England
•Parents of children not participating in the FiCTION trial within Scotland and north-east England
•Children with active caries at baseline (who are participating in the FiCTION Trial) within north-east England
•Children without active caries at baseline attending dental practices within north-east England

Parents will be asked to complete a questionnaire at the beginning and after 18 months for the IMPACT study. Some parents in north-east England will also be asked to talk to a member of the study team to discuss their general thoughts about taking part in research.

Children living in the north-east England will also be asked to take part. They will be asked to let the researcher (HC) look at their teeth once FiCTION participants) or twice (non-FiCTION participants).
