  • Research summary

    Objectives: -
    • To perform a literature search with regards to the effects of managing a child with diabetes on parents
    • To measure parental stress related to having a child with diabetes using the ‘Pediatric inventory for Parents’ (PIP).
    • To investigate the impact upon parents caring for a child with diabetes through parent focus group
    • To implement service improvement to alleviate parental stress

    Methods:
    Quantitative
    • We plan to use PIP score as an assessment tool for evaluating parental stress. The PIP is a tool designed to measure parental stress in relation to having a child with a chronic illness. The reliability and validity of the PIP has been assessed in various studies that have endorsed its use as a measurement for parental stress.
    • Parents of all children who will attend the diabetes outpatient clinics throughout the SHSCT will be invited to complete the PIP.
    • The Paediatric Inventory for Parents tool will be used as an assessment tool and the results statistically analysed.

    Qualitative: -
    1.Parental focus groups (2 groups)
    • Letters will be sent to parents inviting them to participate in focus groups held at the hospital, focusing on aspects contributing to parents stress regarding management of their child’s diabetes. Themes from PIP will guide areas for exploration. Invitation letters will detail the purpose and methods of the study. The focus groups will be recorded (after informed consent given) and transcribed.

    Conclusion
It is anticipated that a positive correlation will be found between heightened parental stress/anxiety and management of their child’s diabetes. Psychological support to improve the service for parents has already discussed with the team psychologists and will be implemented if concluded to be necessary. We would aim to re evaluate parental perceptions after a period of time.
