Research summary
Sporting Memories is a charity providing sports-based reminiscence and physical activity to older people living with dementia. Dementia is associated with alarmingly low physical activity despite evidence it improves wellbeing and reduces the risk of health problems such as heart disease. Furthermore, evidence suggests group reminiscence is beneficial to wellbeing and inclusion for people with dementia. The groups are well attended by men despite low overall engagement of men in community support, but little is known about the features of groups which appeal to men. Aims: To evaluate the perceived impact on physical and mental health, and social inclusion, for men living with dementia through sporting reminiscence activities (or combined reminiscence and physical activity) during Sporting Memories groups; to identify the features of sporting reminiscence which appeal to men through observation of the content, style and social dynamics of Sporting Memories groups.
Additional questions: Are there specific barriers that men with dementia face in engaging with support, and how are these overcome; what recommendations can be made about the features of groups that appeal to men, to inform the practice of other organisations wishing to support men living with dementia?REC name
