  • Research summary

Topic A is to ascertain whether meeting a particular set preoperative weight loss or even weight loss at all before surgery has a huge impact on postoperative outcome.

The outcome measures adopted are postoperative weight loss and length of stay in the hospital. We chose the length of stay because it has a bearing on the intraoperative and immediate postoperative complications that may necessitate longer stay and more cost to the patient.

Topic B is to identify remission rates amongst diabetic patients who had bariatric surgery. The main outcome is to focus on HBA1c, a measure of glucose control.

We define diabetic remission as achieving HbA1c levels of <5.7% without the ongoing use of pharmacological or surgical therapy for one year. So we will be looking at stoppage or reduction in the use of hypoglycemic agents and HBA1c as a measure of glucose control.

Outcome measures will be reviewed by analysis pseudonoymised data for up to 5years postoperatively.
