Research summary
This study focuses on improving an understanding of pre-trial clients’ needs and the extent to which pre-trial therapy is effective.
There is currently an increasing demand for pre-trial therapy, combined with a dearth of research in this area of therapeutic support. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) guidance for pre-trial therapy relies on expert opinion rather than evidence based practice, indicating that that research in this field is particularly important.
This research is undertaken with the intent of informing best practice amongst support services for survivors of sexual violence at a local level, As well as leading to better support for clients, benefits of the research may include better commissioning of counselling services and better CPS support e.g. regarding their use of counselling notes in sexual violence cases.
We aim to recruit at least 10 clients who are receiving or have received pre-trial counselling within the last two years. Clients will be recruited by the only two organisations offering pre-trial counselling service in Brighton& Hove and East Sussex, Survivors' Network and Counselling Plus. Clients will be individually interviewed by the researcher and these qualitative data supplemented with CORE scores.Interviews will last up to 1.5 hours and will be conducted at Survivors' Network premises or over Skype.
The study will last 6 months, from participants' recruitment to dissemination of the results.
