Research summary
Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a genetic condition and affected patients have high circulating levels of blood cholesterol. If untreated the condition is known to be associated with early onset heart disease. Reducing cholesterol levels in FH patients is the mainstay of FH treatment plans and cholesterol lowering medications are routinely prescribed to FH patients. Despite the health benefits of taking cholesterol lowering medications, it is known that patient compliance is not optimal. This may be related to the patients' perception of their medical condition that in turn influences their behaviour - one of the models describing this mode of behaviour is known as the common sense model of illness representations. In this study we explore patient behaviour in relation to their diagnosed condition. This is part of an international study named 'FH 10 countries study' and our study represents the FH cohort in the UK.
