  • Research summary

Apixaban is a medication that helps to prevent the formation of blood clots. Due to its effect on the blood and its role in the management of certain conditions it is essential that patients understand why they need to take it and the importance of following the dosing instructions. This study intends to assess whether or not an educational intervention using a standardised checklist helps inform patients to use their medicine appropriately to receive optimum benefit. To assess the impact of the educational intervention we will invite patients already taking apixaban to complete a questionnaire before and after an educational session with the clinical pharmacist. Responses to the questionnaire will be scored and any improvement in score will be measured. Areas where patients continue to have difficulty in answering the questionnaire will be noted to inform future development of the educational intervention. If the intervention demonstrates improvement in patient knowledge it will be embedded into routine clinical practice.
