  • Research summary

Dermatological diseases can cause a considerable impact on the Quality of Life (QoL) of patients. Family members and partners of patients can also be affected. Family members many times are parents, partners or children that are made to alter their personal work or social schedules to care for the patient. The impact on the family member may be overwhelming and include self-neglect, low self-esteem with or without depression, anxiety and insomnia. Health care systems focus on the well-being of patients and what can be done to improve their health. In doing so, the overall impact of the condition on the family may be overlooked. This cross sectional study aims to assess the impact on the QoL of patients and family members of patients with chronic dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, acne, eczema, hidradenitis suppurativa. Patients aged 18 and over attending the Dermatology outpatient clinic either via a face to face or virtual appointment will be invited to fill in an online form regarding their demographics (age, educational qualifications etc.) and a validated questionnaire about their present QoL. They will then provide a link to their family member who will then be invited to fill in an online form regarding their demographics (age, educational qualifications etc.) and two validated questionnaires about their present QoL. The study including the analysis will last from May 2022 until September 2023.
The anonymized results from this study will also be compared with the anonymized results of a similar study in The Bahamas which has obtained ethical approval and is presently ongoing. The results of this comparison will enable us to ascertain if there are any similarities or differences in the QoL of patients and their family members in the two countries.
