Research summary
Obesity is a new world wide epidemic increasing the number of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Scotland is facing an obesity crisis that threatens to overwhelm the economy and place a tremendous burden on the organisations and institutions that care for us. According to a national survey about diabetes in 2013, around 32% of those people with type 2 diabetes were overweight and 55% were obese. NHS Ayrshire and Arran have the third highest rate of diabetes and obesity in West of Scotland.
There is limited drugs available to treat obesity and weight gain is a side-effect of these drugs. However, surgery is a new and effective treatment in the management of obese people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
This project aims to look at the impact of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes mellitus and weight loss in Ayrshire and Arran.
This study will only look at the outcomes of people who have had bariatric surgery between 2008 and 2014 at University Hospital Ayr. The study will involve looking at data already collected before surgery, at yearly intervals and at the furthest point away from surgery. The research will assess the outcomes in relation to resolution of type 2 diabetes, weight loss and types of surgery. This will be done through appropriate statistical testing. The data will remain anonymous and will not involve direct contact with any patient.
This information will be used to increase the awareness of the usefulness of bariatric surgery in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in obese people in Ayrshire and Arran. Long term benefits may validate this novel treatment in this important public health condition.
