  • Research summary

Patients who have a large body mass index have been seen to have significant deficits in cognitive function. These deficits are reported to be associated and related to alterations in blood pressure, insulin resistance and inflammation, which are known risk factors for cognitive decline. Little is understood about the direct effects of rapid weight loss upon these parameters. Patients undergoing medical weight management or bariatric surgery at Salford Royal Hospital will be examined for cognitive function 2 weeks prior to, and 16 weeks following surgery/initiation of medical weight management. Cognitive function will be assessed using a computerised battery of tests for mental function. Blood sampling, blood pressure and weight loss will be undertaken as per usual clinical care.
