  • Research summary

Patients referred to the injection clinic at the physiotherapy outpatient department of Forth Valley Royal Hospital by their physiotherapists will be asked if they would like to partake in this study. Inclusion Criteria will include being 18 years or older and this being their first corticosteroid injection. The exclusion criteria for participants will be those with language difficulties, an inability to read, limited cognitive function or previous or current treatment for psychological or psychiatric problems. Those who agree will be randomly allocated to either a control or an intervention group by way of concealed opaque envelopes. The researcher will be blinded as to which group each participant is allocated to. Those in the control group will be asked to complete the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Index (STAI), while subjects in the intervention group will be asked to read a patient information leaflet prior to filling out the STAI. Data collection will be carried out only once, immediately prior to patients’ appointments for the injection clinic. The injector will have no role in the study and won't know which group each participant was in. The injector will go through the leaflet with each individual before administering the corticosteroid injection so that all participants are equally informed. Data will be analysed to establish if the patient information leaflet impacts on the state anxiety of patients who have been referred for a corticosteroid injection.
