Research summary
Previous research has highlighted that alcohol, in terms of being intoxicated on day of injury and having a history of alcohol abuse are influential factors in predicting cognitive functioning following a TBI (Lange et al., 2007). Findings in the literature are inconsistent with some studies reporting that alcohol leads to poorer outcomes and others stating that alcohol does not impact outcome following TBI. The current study aims to address the mixed findings and gain a better understanding of the relative contributions of alcohol (intoxication on day of injury and history of alcohol abuse) on memory and discharge status following a TBI.
This quantitative study will involve a retrospective case note review of individuals who were referred to and attended a regional inpatient neuro-rehabilitation service over a fourteen year period (April 2006-April 2019).Findings from this study hope to enhance understanding of the role that alcohol plays in terms of post-acute memory impairment and an individuals' ability to function independently following a single incident traumatic brain injury. Additionally, this study hopes to improve clinical practice and service provision.
