Research summary
This study aims to explore whether attendance at a physiotherapy led exercise group following a recent stroke, influences attitudes to continuing exercise and activity after completing the classes. Background: The benefits of exercise on health and well being are well known and can help to reduce the risk of stroke or further stroke. Stroke survivors, face some barriers to doing exercise. There is some evidence to support the benefits of exercise in a class environment for individuals with chronic stroke symptoms but there is a lack of research to explore the impact of exercise in a class environment after a recent stroke. Some stroke service users in the East Lancashire Hospital Trust have suggested that attending the physiotherapy led class made them more willing to continue with activity after discharge from the class. Methods: We will invite 20 individuals who have attended and completed 6-8 classes and five individuals who attended but not completed the classes, to participate in the study. We will interview them and ask about their experience of the class and the impact that it has had on their activity. We will ask their thoughts about the timing of the class in their recovery and about the barriers they face to doing activity after a stroke. We will ask for permission to access routinely collected information from their clinical record such as balance measures and ongoing activity levels, so that we can explore levels of ongoing activity in individuals with varied level of impairment. Expected outcomes: This study will improve understanding of whether exercise in a physiotherapy led class can influence attitudes towards activity following discharge form the service. It will help us to understand the barriers to doing activity following a stroke and will inform future service provision.
