Research summary
We will assess women’s experience of skin symptoms in perimenopause and menopause using mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative research).
The current evidence base is very limited regarding the effect of the menopause on normal skin or on common skin conditions such as eczema. There is also very little evidence regarding the impact of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on normal skin or common skin conditions.
In 2024 we surveyed 50 women attending a menopause clinic (British Association Dermatologists Annual meeting). 100% suffered at least one skin symptom, (dryness, itching, vulval symptoms, hair loss, sore mouth and acne). 2/3 were managing a skin condition without seeking medical help and dermatology quality of life score (DLQI) demonstrated that skin symptoms were having a moderate impact on women’s everyday quality of life.
We will conduct a national survey of peri/menopausal women to define the burden of skin symptoms during this transition. A national survey is required to demonstrate the impact of the menopause on the skin in a large and diverse group of individuals. This study will provide much needed evidence to understand the impact of skin symptoms and conditions in peri/menopausal women nationally. The data collected will provide essential evidence for future research grant applications, addressing skin conditions and management through the menopause.
To triangulate the data from the national study and provide in depth context we will deliver semi structured interviews with women with lived experience of the menopause and skin symptoms. This qualitative element will describe their experiences of managing skin symptoms during the menopause, where they look for advice and support, and barriers and opportunities for healthcare access which could help guide local commissioners of Women’s Health Services.
We will work in full partnership with menopausal women who part of the research team.
