Research summary
Supported self-management, which includes providing Personal Asthma Action Plans, helps people adjust their treatment in response to changes in symptoms. Studies show that this improves day-to-day control and reduces the risk of asthma attacks and time off work/school. However, less than a quarter of people replying to a recent Asthma UK web-survey owned an action plan.
This study forms the preliminary work (programme development grant) of a programme of research aiming to help general practices embed supported self-management into routine asthma care. The programme development grant includes a qualitative study in which we will explore the best ways of enabling supported self-management to be fully adopted into routine care. We will use focus groups and interviews with patients, general practitioners, nurses and practice staff from approximately 10 GP practices across England and Scotland. The findings from this study will inform an application for a Programme Grant to develop an intervention for testing in a randomised cluster trial.
