  • Research summary

Prescriptions of corticosteroids are given to patients with a primary or secondary immunodeficiency for many different reasons and can be valuable in treating immediate symptoms and long-term health conditions. However, clinical observations have shown that patients can be reluctant to begin or eager to terminate medication regimes early, possibly due to possible side effects or an alternative reason. A gap exists in research describing reasons behind attitudes towards corticosteroids and decisions made by immunology patients. This research is proposed to understand immunology patients’ experiences of and attitudes towards taking corticosteroids in order to support both patients and clinicians and provide the most appropriate care. Additionally, information as to how patients can be supported to commence or continue medication regimes as prescribed would be valuable in the development of new practices.
