Research summary
Renal transplantation can be a life-saving procedure for patients with severe kidney disease. The amount of fat that is around the kidney which is transplanted in theatre is somewhat arbitrary and a matter of surgeon choice. Some surgeons clear the fat extensively while others transplant the kidney with significant amounts of peri-nephric fat. Evidence has shown that a number of immune cells are resident in fat tissue throughout the body with significant immunological effects. However they have not yet been tested for in the fat around the kidney. This pilot study aims to identify whether there are immune cells present in the fat around the donated and subsequently transplanted kidney, and to consider the implications of this on graft survival and rejection.
